南アのワールドカップ効果、英国ではブブゼラ（vuvuzela）が大人気

今回の南アフリカのワールドカップで印象的なのは、観客席から鳴り響いてくるブブゼラ（bubuzela）の音。

左のビデオでは正しいブブゼラの吹き方をレクチャーしている。


ワールドカップの影響を受けて、ヨーロッパでは昨秋あたりからブブゼラが大人気。イギリスでも、Amazon やスーパーマーケットなどで毎日飛ぶように売れている。

しかしこのブブゼラ、方々で物議を醸している。
あまりにも音が大きいために、選手・審判・観客など各方面から苦情があがっているのだ。

数値で表してみると、ブブゼラの音は 127 デシベル。
これが競技場内では 144 デシベルにもなり、太鼓の 122 デシベル、審判の笛の 121.8 よりもずっと大きく、なんと花火や飛行機の離陸音、ロックコンサートの音量より大きいことを示している。

イギリスの国営放送 BBC には、6 月 10 日の開会以来、ブブゼラの音についての苦情が 220 件も寄せられた（6 月 14 日時点）。イングランドでは、自宅のテレビで試合観戦している人の 10 人に 6 人が音声のボリュームを下げているのだそうだ。BBC は急遽ブブゼラの音が入らないようにした中継方法も検討中。

逆にこれを商機として利用しているケースもある。

南アフリカの競技場の外では、ブブゼラの音が聞こえない耳栓を売り出したり、イギリスでは、テレビでの観戦時に背景にかけるとブブゼラの音を消す効果のある MP3 ファイルをネット上で販売したりと、付随ビジネスも現れている。

南アフリカでは、熱狂的なサポーターたちがゲーム中だけでなく、空港到着時から街中、朝から夜中までずっとブブゼラを吹いているらしく、これではさすがにげんなり。

郷に入っては郷に従えという考えも多いものの、全世界的に苦情は少なくない。ブブゼラはワールドカップ後も世界に広がるのだろうか？　

きっと自分が応援しているチームが優勢に立っている時には、ブブゼラの音も気にならないのだろう。あなたはブブゼラに賛成？　反対？

World Cup in South Africa: UK’s Vuvuzela Feaver

The stadiums are filled with drone of vuvuzela at the World Cup 2010.

The video above shows how to play a vuvuzela like a professional player.

Millions of Vuvuzelas have been sold in Europe from last autumn due to The World Cup effect. Since Vuvuzela feaver arrived in the UK, vuvuzelas have flown off the racks of Amazon and sumermarkets.

However, vuvuzela has sparked global debate over loud drone due. Many football players, referees, and supporters have complained about it.

According to the survey, the sound emitted by a vuvuzelas was the equivalent to 127 decibels. It can generate a drone of up to 144 decibels inside stadiums, which is lauder than a drum's 122 decibels, or a referee's whistle...even fireworks, a plane taking off or a rock concert.

The BBC has received 220 complaints (as of June 14) after the kick-off on June 10. 

In England, six out of ten fans who watch games at home are now turning down to cut out the horn-blowing. The BBC investigates the possibility of transmitting an alternative "vuvuzela free" version of its World Cup coverage.

One old lady rang her cable provider to complain about the 'loud buzzing' coming from her television.
Another pensioner called pest control in over the weekend amid fears her house was being attacked by a swarm of bees.

Some people found out a business chance from the complaints.

Some started selling vuvuzela ear plugs outside a stadium, and the other £2.45 MP3 file of active noise cancellation to eliminate the horns from broadcasts.

In South Africa, lunatic supporters keep blowing the horns not only during the games, but from the arrival at the airport to walking down the street 24-hour a day. It sounds bored to death.

Though we said "When in Rome, do as the Romans do", the fierce debate over vuvuzela has spread all over the world. Will it spread out to the end of the world after the World Cup?

ゴードン・ブラウンとキットカット／ Brown & KitKat

お気に入りの「Top Gear」を鑑賞しながら、イギリス総選挙の最後の 2 座席の行方を気にしていた先週末。前回は、ちょっとまじめにイギリスの総選挙について書いたけど、やはり私が好きなのは小ネタ。


総選挙をにらんで、今年初めからダイエットに挑んだゴードン・ブラウン。


1 日に3、4 個は必ず食べてしまう大のキットカット好きなブラウン。これも内助の功で知られる、妻サラの気遣いによるもの。キットカットの代わりに、1 日バナナを 9 本食べるというダイエット方法。


ハンサムでメディアを巧みに使った前任者のブレアに比べ、無骨で見栄えのしないブラウン。元労働党党首のニール・キノックからは、"Of course Gordon has got a radio face（ゴードンはラジオ向きな顔に決まってるさ）" と三党の TV 討論会の前日に言われてしまう始末。


様々なメディアがこのことについて記事を書いていて、BBC はバナナとキットカットの比較表を掲載。「倫理的な実践」という項目でフェアトレードについて触れているのがイギリスらしい。イギリスとアイルランドではキットカットはフェアトレード商品として認証を受けているものの、ネスレ社は少々物議を醸し出している様子。


世界のキットカットが紹介され、ドイツのヘーゼルナッツ味、日本のりんご味、カナダのバナナ味や、日本で入試シーズンに販売されていた「キット勝つ」にまで言及がされている。ちなみに日本のキットカットや「キット勝つ」については、こちらの記事でも取り上げられている。さすがイギリスの国民的チョコレートバー。

バナナにまつわるネタと言えば、The Sun や The Telegraph によると、2008 年政変時に TV の前でバナナをふりかざしたミルバントは、その後野望は果たせず。今回の選挙の結果といい、バナナは少々縁起が悪いよう。


キットカットに目がないゴードン・ブラウン。
首相在任中に、日本のキットカット珍味セットでも贈ったら、名誉議員にでもしてくれたかもしれない。


選挙では惨敗でも、せめてダイエットだけでも成功したのかな。

Brown & KitKat

I was checking the last 2 seats in the UK election while watching my favorite "Top Gear" last week. My previous blog was written about the General Election seriously…I’m rather interested in silly stories.

For the Election, Gordon Brown started dieting last February to make his image better.


Mr.Brown was addicted to KitKat and had a three-or-four-KitKat-a-day habit. Sarah, who is known as a supportive wife was concerned his health and suggested him to eat 9 bananas a day for diet.


Compared to handsome and media-manipulating Tony Blair, Brown looks dull. Lord Neil Kinnock, ex-Labour's leader said "Of course Gordon has got a radio face" just the day before the first TV debate.


Media wrote various articles about this. BBC told the story with the chart comparing banana and KitKat. It mentions about fair trade in the item "Ethical Credentials". KitKat was certified as fair trade in the UK and Ireland in January 2010. However parent company Nestle still seems to stand in a controversial position.


The article introduced many kinds of flavors of KitKats, apple (Japan). hazelnut (Germany), banana (Canada). Even Japanese unique "Kit-Katsu ("you will win" in Japanese)" for an entrance exam. This article also wrote about it. The British no doubt love nationally well-liked chocolate bars.


There is another story about a banana. According to the Sun and the Telegraph, David Miliband tried to make a good impression with the photo holding a banana during the Labour conference in September 2008, but failed. Bananas seem not going well with politics, the article said.


Brown, chocolate addict, would love Japanese special KitKats. I might deserve a privileged bureaucrat or a member of the House of Lords.


He was defeated in the Election, could he at least succeed in losing weight?

Top Gear、日本上陸


日頃の不勉強さを反省して、先月から 1 年ぶりに英語のコースを開始。


もちろん、私が選ぶのはイギリス英語なので、集まる人々もイギリス好きが多い。そんなクラスメートから、あの Top Gear の放送が 4 月から BS フジで始まった（金曜日 24:00〜25:00）と聞いて、浮き足立ってしまった。



Top Gear といえば、1977 年から続く、BBC が誇る車マニア向け番組。コテコテ英国人 3 人、ジェレミー、リチャード、ジェイムズが出演し、一時休止はあったものの、アメリカやカナダなど、英国外でも根強い人気を保つ。


この番組、ただの車情報番組ではない。
日本でロケされたシリーズでは、新幹線と日産 GT−R のどちらが目的地に早く到着するか競ったり、車の試乗コーナーでは、イギリスで観た回には装甲車が登場。辛辣なコメントが飛び交い、突拍子もない企画で出演者が重症を負ったり、亡くなったこともある過激なエンターテイメント番組。


先々週放送されたシリーズ 8 のエピソード 4（本国では 2006 年に放送）には、有名人のタイム比べでユアン・マクレガーが登場。容赦なく、彼がエンストするシーンも放送。


この回はメルセデスの S クラスをジェレミーが試乗し、最新機能を試す中、音声認識機能に「くだらないラジオ局」と言うと、BBC ラジオ 1 がかかってお喜び、といったシニカルな部分はさすがイギリス的ユーモア。


次のコーナーでは、キプロス島でポルシェのカイエンがロードレースコースを走るのに対抗し、イギリス軍兵が同距離の地上 4 km からパラシュートで降下してタイムを競った。このように競い方が半端でない。


この回で圧巻だったのは、冒頭の動画にあるメルセデス S クラスの大改造。メルセデスの皮のシートを酷評するジェレミーが、車内を自分の家のようにしてほしいと、インテリアデザインをフランス人のマリーの依頼する。


ところがマリーが考案したのはオシャレな車内ウォッカ・バーで、自分の目指すスタイルと全くかけ離れていると知ったジェレミーは「こんなの僕のツイードのジャケットには似合わない、どうしても袖付き椅子がほしいんだ〜」と可愛らしく駄々をこねる。


そこから始まるのが英仏戦争を呈したぶつかりあい。ジェレミーは、ヘンリー ５ 世の率いるイングランド軍がフランス軍を破った「アジンコートの戦い」を引き合いに出すし、マリーは「フライドポテトにお酢をかけて食べるなんて、どうみたって変よ」と反撃。車番組を超えた応戦は、車マニアでない私でも楽しめる。


最終的に、ジェレミーは強引にセメントを投入し、木の床をひいて、念願の袖付き椅子を置き、暖炉や本棚まで設け、車内にはティーセットまである。しかもその車を試運転してしまうのだが、コンクリートの重さでスピードは出ないし、座席はツルツルに磨いた木の床の上を滑ってしまうし、走行中に暖炉の煙突は吹っ飛んでしまう。ブレーキランプが点灯しないことに気がつくけど、電気系統の配線は全てコンクリートの下で後の祭り…。


だけど頑にこの車を愛する、偏屈で熱狂的なジェレミーはイギリス人の共感をそそるのだろう。あまりにもイギリス人らしく、私はそんなところが好き。


私がイギリスにいた頃は日曜日の夕方に放送されていて、日曜日のサザエさんのように、観る度に週末が終わる哀愁を感じる番組だった。じつはあまり観たことがなくて、こんなに面白い番組だったとは…これも字幕があるからなんだけど。英語、がんばろう。

Now Top Gear Is On-air in Japan


I came back to English school last month as I was too lazy last year. I prefer to study British English, so many UK-manias turn up in a classroom. One of my classmates told me Top Gear started being broadcast on BS Fuji (Friday 24:00-25:00) and it made me so excited.


Top Gear is one of the best motor TV-shows in the UK which started in 1977. 3 real-British guys, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May drive and challenge lunatic car races in every episode. Though the TV program was suspended once, now it got worldwide renown among car manias and  has been broadcast in the US, Canada, and so on.


This program is not only a car show, rather huge entertainment with British sense of humor.  When they did a shooting in Japan, Shinkansen(Japanese bullet train) raced with Nissan GT-R. Even an armored vehicle appeared in a episode which I've seen in the UK. It is sometimes extreme entertainment show in which caustic comments pop-up every minute and some cast suffered severe injury and other was dead from extremely adventurous challenge.


The week before, Ewen McGregor challenged celebrity time race in the episode 4 of series 8 was on-air (UK broadcast in 2006). Of course it showed he stalled without reservation.


In the episode, Jeremy drove Mercedes S class. He tried the latest equipment and shouted "the most lavish radio station"...then he got so satisfied as the car started playing BBC radio 1. You can see a piece of British sense of humor.


In the next corner, Porsche Cayenne  run on the race course in Cyprus to race with a parachuter from the Royal army who dived from 4 km above ground level. It's such a crazy race!


The most tremendous story was the complete revamp of Mercedes S class (see the movie above). He complained about the leather seats and asked Marie, French interior designer to remodel the car like his home.


Contrary to his expectation, Marie designed a trendy vodka bar which was completely against his idea. He had tantrum against her and shouted "Tweed doesn't go with it, I want...I want wing-back chair!!"


The long-history fight recurred between the UK and France.  Jeremy quoted the Battle of Agincourt (Henry V's England army defeated French in 1415). Then Marie insisted "Vinegar on chips are really revolting." These battles are fun enough for a no-car mania like me.


Finally, Jeremy brought a cement mixer. Cement went into the car instead of the floor stripped out and set wooden floor on it. His long cherished items were installed...wing-back chairs, fire stove, small bookshelf and even tea set. They tried the car which didn't run fast enough with heavy cement. The chairs slipped on the freshly-waxed floor, the chimney went off during the run, and brake lump didn't work....any way an electric wiring was under the cement. They had nothing to do with it.


But I can say, most of the British like bigot and enthusiastic guy like him. In a sense, he is a typical British. I like him, too.


The TV program was on-air around Sunday evening when I was in the UK. It evoked some sorrowful mood at the end of weekend, just like "Sazae-san." Actually I didn't watch the program often in the UK. Thanks to subtitles, I could enjoy many cranky words and blue jokes. I need to study English more...

18 回の流産を乗り越え、無事出産

イギリスで 18 回の流産を経験した末、無事に女児を出産したアンジー・ベイカーさんのことが話題に。週末、Yahoo ニュースでも取り上げられていたので、目にした方も多いことでしょう。

私の隣に座るゴシップ好きの同僚ともこのニュースが話題になり、まだ 33 歳で、13 年の間に 18 回も流産したという点で二人とも驚き。

主治医はベイカーさんの白血球に問題があり、不妊につながっていたと診断。「18 回も流産するより、宝くじに当たる方がはるかに簡単」ということばはちょっとショッキング。

まだ 100 年ぐらい前までは、出産時に女性が命を危うくすることが決して珍しくなかった時代。医学の発達した現代ですら、私の周りでは流産を経験している女性が少なくありません。

それでも、人間何でも忘れてしまうもので、2 回の流産の末に男の子を産んだ知人は、日常生活で家事と仕事のバランスを取るのが難しくなると、ついつい子どもにあたってしまうそうです。

彼女が少しストレスがたまっていそうに見える時、「流産しても、がんばって子どもを産んだよね。子どもって欲しくてもなかなか産めるものじゃないから、本当にラッキーだったよねえ」と私が話しかけると、彼女は魔法にかかったように幸せな顔を取り戻します。

私もこんなことを書きながら、いつか子どもを持ったら同じようなことばで諌められるんだろうか…。今から反省。

Giving Birth After 18th Miscarriage

Angie Baker, 33 year-old from East Sussex, finally gave birth to a baby girl after 18th miscarriage. Many Japanese found this news as it was picked up on Yahoo news last weekend.

My gossip-lover colleague sitting next to me knew and talked about it with me. Both of us got so surprised that Mrs. Baker had 18 miscarriages at 33 for 13 years.

Her doctor found out that her white blood cells caused a problem with pregnancy. "Eighteen miscarriages is a huge number. You're more likely to win the lottery than have 18 miscarriages through bad luck."... his words sound so shocking.

Around 100 years ago, many women had to take a fatal risk when they delivered a baby. Even now, some of my friends had to experience a miscarriage despite of advance in modern medicine.

Well, we will easily forget all sorts of things, even the hardest part in your life. One of my friend finally got a baby boy after 2 miscarriages. Now she sometimes becomes hard on his little boy when she lacks a balance between her job and household responsibilities.

When she looks stressed out, I tell her "you could finally give birth to a baby boy despite of 2 miscarriages. It's amazing, you've done a great job. Not all women cannot have a baby, so you're such a lucky girl!" As soon as she is told like that, she looks enchanted and has a big smile on her face.

Though I am writing this, who knows what will happen to me? Somebody might tell me the same thing when I got a kid. It seems I've already needed moments of reflection.

ジェイミー・オリバー、TED Prize を受賞

食べ物ネタが続きます。

TED（Technology Entertainment Design）は、科学者、アーティスト、政治家、ミュージシャン、起業家など、ジャンルにこだわらず興味深い取り組みをしている人々を招いた講演会を毎年アメリカで開催しています。

そのプログラムの１つ、TED Prizeで、今年は日本でもおなじみのイギリス人 TV シェフ、ジェイミー・オリバーが表彰されました。 ビデオは 2 月 10 日に行われた表彰式のスピーチ。

親しみやすいキャラクターとスタイリッシュな料理で人気を博してきたジェイミー。ただセレブシェフになるだけでなく、学校給食や子どもの食生活の見直しをよびかけたり、はみ出し者のティーンエイジャーに自身のレストランで働く機会を与えて更生するサポートをしたり、なかなかな社会起業家でもあります。

そんな彼が、イギリスに続いて、アメリカで ７ 年間続けてきた子どもの食生活改善プログラムの成果が表彰されました。

子どもがトマトを「じゃがいも」と間違えたり（同じ科ではあるけど）、カリフラワーをブロッコリーと思ったりするなんて、日本でも見られるまだかわいいレベル。以前、幼稚園に子どもが持って来たお弁当で、ご飯以外には駄菓子が詰められていたという記事を読んだことがありますが、欧米よりはまだましとはいえ、日本の食生活も危なくなってきているなあと改めて実感させられました。

スピーチの映像には、ところどころ彼のテレビ番組の映像が挿入されています。舞台となったのは、成人の半分が肥満だと言われている West Virginia の Huntington。家族は料理をするということを知らず、冷凍食品やインスタントフードだけが並ぶ食卓、ピザが朝食...それがアメリカのごく一般的な食事の風景。ピザが朝食というところは、イギリスよりさらに重度の症状です。

ミルクと言えば、給食でも砂糖や合成着色料のつけられた加工ミルクがメインで、それだけでも年間でどれだけ糖分を摂取しているかといった刺激的なデモンストレーションも。

番組の予告編は、テレビらしく少し挑発的な演出がされていますが、「この子どもたちが、初めて親よりも短い間しか生きることができない世代だ」と子どもの食生活に関する警鐘には切迫感があります。「家庭」「学校」「社会（Main Street）」の 3 つの側面からの改善策は、企業の CSR にまで話は及びますが、消して大金のかかるプロジェクトではない、と彼は説明します。

私がイギリスにいた頃は、ちょうど彼がイギリスの学校給食を改善しようと取り組んでいた頃で、そのことがテレビだけでなく新聞でも取り上げられていました。そこでも、そして今回も一番大きな壁となっているのが、大人の無知と給食のおばさんたちの反抗。

イギリス版の番組の最後では、生徒の親たちが学校に招かれ、改善された給食を試食して、まっとうな食事がどれだけ体にも心にも良いものかと思い知ります。

最近きちんと 3 食摂らないで、食事をなおざりにしがちな私の耳にも痛い限りですが…。

Jamie Oliver won TED 2010 Prize

It's about the food again.

TED (Technology Entertainment Design) organize huge annual conference in the US to invite scientists, artists, politicians, musicians, entrepreneurs, and so on from all sorts of fields.

In the TED 2010 Prize, one of their programs, the prize went to UK's TV chef, Jamie Oliver. He is also famous in Japan. You can watch his speech at the ceremony on 10 February from here or just click the image above.

He became a popular TV chef for his friendly personality and stylish food. He did not become complacent with his status as a celebrity chef. He launched the program to improve school dinner in England and support dropped-out teenagers by offering working experience in his restaurant. He is a real social entrepreneur.

He was commended for his 7-year program to improve children's diet in the US following his achievement in the UK.

A kid take a tomato for a potato (I know they are the same family :-) ) or a cauliflower for a broccoli ...it's still not so serious. You can see the same thing in Japan. Once I read an article about a lunch box at a kindergarten in Japan. It was filled with rice and many cheep sweets. I assume Japan is still ahead of Britain and US in healthy diet, but this article was something for me to blow a whistle.

There are some clips from the trailer of Jamie's TV program in his speech video. He made his new challenge in Huntington, West Virginia where nearly half of the adults are considered obese. Family doesn't know cooking food and pizza is their breakfast. That is normal daily life there. Eating pizza is even worse than in the UK.

Even at school, milk means normally processed product containing a lot of sugar, chemical ingredients and artificial color. He demonstrated how children took in sugar for a year after drinking sugared milk by showing shocking visual.

"Unhealthiest City in America", the trailer of TV program is a bit more straight forward and sensational in TV's emotional way. But what he said "this is the first generation living shorter than parents" is very serious word regarding children's diet and life. He explained his project from three aspects, "Home", "School", and "Main Street." It covered CSR and is a really big topic. But he said it didn't cost a huge amount of money for the project.

While I was staying in London, Jamie was tackling to improve school dinner in England. Not only his TV program but newspapers kept paying attention to this topic. The mighty walls against him is always people's ignorance and dinner ladies' resistance even in the US.

In the last story of his UK's TV program, parents visited school and eat the improved school dinner. They found out what a terrible meal their children ate and that the proper meal made them healthy physically and mentally.

Actually I am not so keen on my meal these days, and don't eat three times a day. It could be my concern, too.

第 5 の味覚、Umami

Times Online で掲載されていた「うま味、第 5 の味覚の謎」。

逆輸入ネタですが、「甘味」「酸味」「塩味」「苦味」に続く、第 5 の味覚として、イギリスで注目を浴びているのが日本食の「うま味」。

日本、北米、ヨーロッパに拠点を置くうま味インフォメーションセンターが、日本食のだし文化を紹介するために、日本全国そして世界中を奔走しているようです。

写真にあるような、立派な本まで出版されています。

Times Online の記事でも紹介されていましたが、なんと 2009 年 3 月は、うま味発見 100 周年記念ということで、ピカデリーサーカスの大型書店 Waterstones で「うま味サミット in ロンドン」まで開催されたそうです。こちらに開催報告も掲載されています。

それにしても、Waterstones のピカデリー店にこんなセミナースペースがあるだなんて知りませんでした。

「うま味」というと、高校時代の家庭科でやった「おすましの作り方」の授業を思い出します。確か「うま味」は中間試験のテストにも出題されたような。

最近では、イギリスのちょっとしたスーパーマーケットにまで寿司が普及したとはいえ、生魚を食べる風習はまだ上流～中流階級の辺りにしかなじみがないようです。

Umami, Taste Of Far East

I reimport this topic from the UK. Creative chefs in the UK are keen on "Umami", this mystery of Japanese cuisine. Umami is one of the key elements in Japanese cuisine as the “fifth taste” following sweet, sour, salt and bitter.

UMAMI Information Center is a organisation which has several offices in Tokyo, London and New York. They are travelling all over the world to introduce this Japanese mystery.

Times Online mentioned about the Umami Summit in London which was hold at Waterstone's Piccadilly in London in March 2009 to celebrate 100th anniversary for the discovery. You can find the report here.

I didn't know that Waterstone at Piccadilly had such a big seminar room.

What I remember with Umami goes back to my high school day. My teacher of domestic science taught us about Umami to explain how to cook Japanese traditional soup. Umami seemed a really important issue, we found it was on a semi-final exam.

These days, Sushi became very popular in the UK, and you can find it even at a supermarket like Waitrose. But most of the British still hesitate to eat raw fish. Only upper or middle class has a privilege to eat them.

Generally speaking, British food is taste-less. The Latin European often pour scorn on and write off the British as no sense of taste. I wonder how the British can enjoy this subtle, delicate and beautiful taste.

大学に入学できない、イギリスの台所事情

2 月といえば、イギリスではそろそろ大学、大学院への申込みの締め切りが近づく頃。

私も大学院を受ける際には、3 月までに申込み書類や志願理由、作品集、成績証明書や推薦状、英語テストの結果やらと諸々揃えるので、この時期は大変でした。大学のコースによっては、コースが始まる 9 月、10 月の直前まで受け付けているところもありますが、人気コースはやはり早めに申し込むのが一番です。

そんなコースの申込み状況にも、変が起きているようです。

昨今の急激な不景気を受けて、イギリスでは大学志望者が急激に増加。外国からの留学の申込みは29%、イギリス国内の 21 ～ 24 歳の申込みは 45%、25 歳以上に至っては 63% も増えているそうです。

つい数年前までは、大学は財政を潤すために留学生を誘導しよう躍起になっていました（政府からの補助金がつかないこともあり、留学生にはイギリス人よりも高い授業料を取ることができる）。そして、イギリス国内で大学への進学者を増やそうという動きもまだ昨年まではあり、メディアにも取り上げられていました。

昨年は「知り合いで Digital 関連のコースを受けたい人がいたら、ぜひこのコースを紹介してほしい」と、私の元へも初めて母校から一斉メールの案内が来ていたくらいでした。

ところが、不景気で職を失った人が大学へ行くことを考え、昨年入学を断られた人々も申し込み、志願者が急激に増加。大学は嬉しい悲鳴をあげているかと思いきや、政府からの補助金は大幅にカットされ、リソースを確保できずにコースの定員数を増やせず、学科を閉鎖したところもあるほどです。

イギリスは早くも景気の二番底を体験しているようです。毎年 1 月は、クリスマス後のセールの効果で売上を見込めるはずが、先月 1 月の VAT 増税のあおりもあって、散々な数字に終わってしまったようです。ちなみに VAT は、日本の消費税と同じ付加価値税です。

VAT が 15% から 17.5% に上がっていたとは…ちょっとショック。

Battle To Become A University Student

February... it's a time to apply for universities in the UK.

When I applied for my post-graduate course, I had to prepare application forms, essay, portfolios, transcript, reference, English score and etc. etc... Some courses still receive applications just before the start of a course. But I recommend applying earlier especially for very demanded and poplar courses.

But we can see some changes in the application for universities in the UK now.

University applicants drastically increase in number this year in the UK due to the economic recession. "Ucas said applications from foreign students were up almost 29 per cent. Demand from students aged 21 to 24 increased by 45 per cent, while interest among over-25s soared by 63 per cent."

In the last decade, many universities were keen on collecting foreign students as they will bring more money than local students by paying higher tuition fee without government's subsidy. More over, the UK government encouraged more local teenagers advance to further study and media reported on it.

I received the first email from my university last year since I left. It said "if you know anyone interested to take a digital media course, please recommend our course..."

Now many mature students are applying for a course since they lost their job by the severe recession and students who were rejected last year are reapplying as well. I supposed all universities gave shriek of joy for the increase in the number of applicants, but the reality was not. As the government had cut funding for education, universities could not keep enough resources to maintain courses and had to close some of the courses.

UK seems encountering 'double-dip' recession now. January is one of the best sales months through the year for sales after Christmas almost every year. It didn't happen this year due to the effect of the global recession and VAT increase in January 2010.

It was shocking news to me that VAT increased from 15% to 175.% !
