ロンドンが舞台ということでたまたま読んでみたニック・ホーンヴィの「ガツン!
」。遅読な私が分厚い小説を一週間で読みあげました。
ストーリーは、ロンドンに住むスケートボードの好きな 15 歳のサムが、ガールフレンドのアリシアを妊娠させてしまうという話。
ここまで読んで、主人公にどんなイメージを持ちますか？ 10 代ならではの旺盛な好奇心と衝動で過ちを犯してしまった不良？
いえ、サムはごく平凡なまでに素直で、将来のことなどよく考えてなくて、臆病で、そして気の利いたことばを言えない男の子なのです。
もちろん自分には彼のようにティーンネージャーで親になるという経験はないけれど、現実が思いもしない方へ二転三転してしまう中での彼の心の揺れ、自分の未来が閉ざされてしまうことへの失望や遣る瀬ない怒りが、今の私の心にとてもリアルにしみてきました。
「ぼくが驚かされるのは、人生のほとんどずっとトラブルが起きないように細心の注意を払ったとしても、たった五秒気を抜いたせいで最悪の事態を招いてしまったりするってことだ。」
悲しいかな、ガールフレンドを妊娠させるだけでなく、人生にはそんなことが沢山あります。
私が一番救われたのは、サムの父親の台詞。これを普段はどうしようもないキャラクターの父親に言わせるところがオツです。
ちょっと長めですが引用。
「ともかく大切なのはだな…
頑張りすぎてダメになるなってことだよ。
愛だの恋だのなんて、おまえの年じゃ続いてもせいぜい五分だ。子供までいるんだから、それが三分に短縮されてもおかしくない。
ってことは、他人との関係を長続きさせようと頑張っても、意味はないってことなわけさ。そんなもの、午後のお茶の時間までもつかどうかも分からないんだからな。」
誰のことばに真実が隠れているか分からないものです。懐かしの 4 番や 19 番のバスも、Upper Street も出てきます。イズリントンが舞台で、デートで行った Borders や映画館もあそこかな、と思えたり。
偶然にも、作者のホーンヴィが脚本を書いた映画「17 歳の肖像」が、今年 4 月に日本で公開になることを発見。ビジュアルも気になって、ぜひ行かねば。

Nick Hornby "SLAM"
Normally I'm a slow-reader, but could finish this thick book in a week.
A 15-year-old boy called Sam loves playing skateboard, and he made Alicia pregnant.
What do you think of Sam to read this short story above?
Is he just too curious, compulsive, and silly bad teenager?
No, he is just ordinary...honest, not thinking about his future well, tremulous coward, and cannot say anything sophisticated.
I didn't become a parent in my teens unlike him, but I really understood and sympathize with him while everything moves so fast toward an unexpected direction. His anger have some reality with me especially when he gets disappointed to lose excitement for his future.
"I got so surprised. Even if we get very careful about everything to avoid troubles through our life, the worst results will come after 5-seconds carelessness."
Yes, it's so sad....but not only teenagers' pregnancy, we have something like this all the time.
While reading the story, I found what Sam's father said. He always becomes impossible, but that's Hornby plotted.
"The most important thing is...don't let you down to hang tough. At your age, you cannot keep your attention for love or girlfriend for more than 5 minutes. It won't last for 3 minutes as now you got a kid. It's just nonsense to keep good relationship with others. It won't last until tea time in the afternoon."
Who knows who is a wise man. My 4 and 19 buses, and Upper Street appear in the story. The story goes on in Islington. I could guess where they went...Borders or cinema.
Hornby wrote a screenplay of "An Education" which will be on screen this April in Japan. The images are gorgeous and I shouldn't miss it.
