Help! アビー・ロード・スタジオ、売却の危機を逃れるか？

先週から何かと話題になっている、アビイ・ロード・スタジオ売却問題。

ビートルズが数々の名アルバムを録音したことで知られ、音楽家の評判も高いこのスタジオ、先週までは EMI が売却をほぼ決定し、どこが買収先になるのかと話題になりましたが、昨日方向転換した模様。今は出資先との話し合いが進んでいるようです。

元ビートルズのメンバー、ポール・マッカートニーが存続のために音頭をとったり、 Cats などで有名な作曲家、アンドリュー・ロイド・ウェーバー がスタジオの買収に興味を示したり、ナショナル・トラストやイングリッシュ・ヘリテッジまで申し出て、状況は二転三転しているようです。

友達の家に行く途中に通ったアビイ・ロード。アビイ・ロードのそばに住んでいると言えば、格が上がるもの。スタジオの辺りは高級住宅地ですが、ちょっと北に行けば移民の多い雑然とした町並みだったり、ロンドンは街が複雑に入り組んでいます。

BBC のニュース動画にもたくさん出ていますが、相変わらずみんなここでお馴染みのポーズの撮影をするんですね。

ところで、埼玉にあるジョン・レノン・ミュージアムが今年の ９ 月 30 日で閉館してしまうのが悔やまれます。

Help! Who Could Save Abbey Road Studio

Abbey Road Studio sell-off has become a top issue from last week.

It is well known as a historical music studio where the Beatles recorded many albums and many musicians have loved this top studio. EMI almost decided to sell the studios, media tried to find out who could be the new owner of it. But it seems EMI changed their mind. They started the talk with the third party which would invest in the revitalisation of the North London complex.

Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney called for Abbey Road to be saved. Lord Lloyd-Webber, the musical composer, was also very interested in buying the studios. National Trust and English Heritage also showed their strong interest to buy the studios. The things are still going backward and forwards.

I always passed Abbey Road by bus on the way to my friend's house. If you can say "I'm living near from Abbey Road", your place sounds so high-status. There are nice old houses around the studio and one of the exclusive residential districts in London. Within a stone's cast of it, you can see a different echnic aspect of the area with many immigrants. London is a maze of town with so many different faces.

Even now, many tourists and Londoners visit here to take a photo imitating the famous record jacket. You can see it in the BBC's video.

By the way, it's such a pity that the John Lennon Museum in Saitama will close on 30 September. I must hurry!

Brit Awards 2010 の受賞結果は

2 月 16 日が授賞式だった Brit Award、今年は US の Lady Gaga の風変わりな衣装と彼女のインターナショナル 3 部門受賞が話題になったようです。

こちらはダイジェスト映像の 1 つ。

最近日本でも話題の Lady Gaga、私はどちらかと言うと Queen の Radio Ga Ga の方が思い浮かぶなあ、と思っていたら、どうも彼女の芸名はこの曲名に由来しているらしい。 ちょうどファッションデザイナーのアレクサンダー・マックイーンが亡くなった直後で、彼女も演奏の冒頭でマックイーンへの追悼の言葉を述べました。

ユニクロ愛用家のラッパー、Dizzee Rascal はイギリス・ソロアーティスト部門を受賞。Rascal とイギリス・アルバム賞を受賞した Florence & The Machine の授賞式の共演が、授賞式から 5 時間とたたずに iTunes ストアで発売され、チャートの 1 位になったのは今時らしい話題です（イギリスの iTunes ストアでのみ有効なので、日本では購入できませんが）。

以前、私が投票した「過去 30 年間におけるイギリス最優秀アルバム」の部門は、オアシスの「(What's The Story) Morning Glory?」が受賞し、コールドプレイも Dido も漏れてしまって残念。そういえば、イギリス・グループ部門にノミネートされていた Doves が受賞されなかったのも残念。

今年の功労賞を受賞した Robbie Williams のメドレー演奏を観ていると、イギリスのラジオでもなじみのある曲の数々が含まれていて、世代を超えて時代を代表する歌手なんだとしみじみと実感しました。

そして「過去 30 年間における最優秀ヒット曲」の部門では、ビー・ジーズも、The Who も、カイリー・ミノーグも、なんとマイケル・ジャクソンも差し置いて、スパイス・ガールズの「Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are」が名誉の栄冠を手にしたのです。なんともイギリスらしいというか…。

Winner For Brit Awards 2010

Brit Awards 2010 was held in London on 16 February. This year's big news was Lady Gaga's extraordinary costume and her hat trick.

These days, Lady Gaga is getting popular in Japan, too. I rather prefer Queen's "Radio Ga Ga" which is coincidentally the root of her name. The show was just after the death of Alexander McQueen. Lady Gaga started her performance with a tribute to this great fashion designer.

Uniqlo follower, Dizzee Rascal won "British Male Solo Artist." After Rascal and another winner Florence & The Machine (MasterCard British Album) performed together on the stage, it was distributed on iTunes Store within 5 hours after the show and became No.1 at the store. It was a kind of breakthrough topic for this year (the tune is available only in the UK, so we cannot buy it in Japan).

BRITs Album of 30 Years in which I voted went to Oasis' "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" What a shame, it didn't go to Coldplay nor Dido. Oh, Doves also missed the title as British Group.

Robbie Williams won Outstanding Contribution Award. His medley included many iconic tunes played on the radio. I realized he is one of the most poplar artist for all ages in the UK.

The BRITs Hits 30 went to... not Bee Gees, The Who, Kylie Minogue, Michael Jackson... amazingly to Spice Girls' "Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are." Well, that's in the UK.

ジェイミー・カラム - THE PURSUIT -

雑誌の新譜紹介記事で、いまさらながらジェイミー・カラムの "THE PURSUIT" が掲載されているのが目に留まりました。私が購入したのは昨年の 11 月。

嫌な予感がしましたが、当時、「国内盤を出す予定はありません」という、CD ショップのよくある宣伝文句を信じた私が愚かでした。ちょうど 6 日前にはボーナストラックの入った国内盤が売り出され、さらに 2 時間のインタビュー、ライブ映像がおさめられた DVD のついたスペシャル盤まで売りだされている。。。

ボーナストラック 2 曲だけだったらまだ許せますが、この DVD は魅力的なだけにちょっと動揺。スペシャル盤は昨年出ていたようですが、国内盤は4 月にある来日公演を控えた商戦のようです。

最近、発売後にコピーフリー盤として、あるいはスペシャルボックスとして再販するケースが多くて、初回盤を購入する純粋なファンは泣かれることが多い今日のこの頃。

アルバム自体は、ジェイミーの少年っぽい甘いボーカルに負けるものか、と思っていたものの、視聴していみると、すぐにアルバム全体に行き渡った彼のセンスの良さに惚れ惚れとして購入してしまいました。センスがいいって本当に大切で、絶妙なさじ加減で、ジャズもクラシックもヒップホップも、異なるジャンルを軽々と飛び越えてしまうのですから、やはりジェイミーはすごい。

そして、東京公演のチケットを取るか迷う日々。

Jamie Cullum / THE PURSUIT

Jamie Cullum's latest album, "THE PURSUIT" was picked up as a monthly new album in a magazine.

Bad feeling hit me. I was silly enough to trust the CD shop's comment "Japanese edition will not be released", when I bought the CD last November. The album's Japanese edition was released just 6 days ago with 2 bonus tracks. More over, another special edition comes with a DVD including 2-hour artist's interview and live!

I can ignore the new edition with only 2 bonus tracks, but it's a bit difficult with this special edition. The special edition was released last year. Japanese edition seems their special promotion for his coming gig in Japan this April.

These days, music companies reissue album as a copy-free edition or special edition soon after the first release. Ardent fans have to cry themselves to sleep to hear about new editions which are more attentive than what they bought.

Firstly, I hesitated to be allured by his boyish and sweet voice. But once I played his music at a shop, I was fascinated by his groovy sense of music and could not refuse it. The sense is very important things for all sorts of art. He seems easily cross any boundaries, jazz, classic, hip hop or whatever and mix different elements in just the right touch of balance.

The verve で勉強ははかどるか？

昨年の 7 月に受講を開始したオンラインコースの受講期間が 22 日で終了してしまうということで、泣く泣く勉強せざるおえなかった先々週末。

昨年はいろいろあって勉強が進まず、受講期間があと 10 日しかない時点で、カリキュラムの 4 分の 1 しか進んでいない…。

そんな時に BGM にしたアルバムの数々。

・The verve "This Is Music: The Singles 92-98"

The verve は "Bitter Sweet Symphony" が聴きたくて選んだベスト盤。何度か繰り返す内に、ブリットロックらしい鋭くて痛々しいギターリフが心にしみて、その他の楽曲もさすがです。ただ、勉強時にアルファー波効果が出るのは "Bitter Sweet Symphony" のみと思われます。

・菊池 成孔「南米のエリザベス・テーラー」

菊池成孔の「南米のエリザベス・テーラー」は、さすが評判が高いだけあって、ポエトリーリーディングやラテンの要素に溢れた、彼らしく魅力的な作品。結構 IT の勉強時にも合います。

でも、段々夜も更けて煮詰まってくるとかけたのは、士気を上げるための「ワーキング・ガール」のサントラ。

世紀のラストスパートで、何とか残り 4 分の 3 を一週間で完了。

The verve - good BGM for studying?

My online course was about to be expired on the 22th this month. At that point, I had finished only a fourth of all curriculum. I had no choice but finish the course during the weekend 2 weeks ago.

Here are the albums during the period.

The verve "This Is Music: The Singles 92-98"

I picked up this The verve's best as I was so desperate for "Bitter Sweet Symphony". Their sharp and painful guitar riff was just the best part of beautiful Brit rock. Though...only "Bitter Sweet Symphony" could sent out alpha wave to me.

Naruyoshi Kikuchi "Elizabeth Taylor en Amerique du Sud"

On the other hand, Naruyoshi Kikuchi's "Elizabeth Taylor en Amerique du Sud" was fantastic piece which featured poetry reading and Latin elements. It really worked even while I was studying IT course.

Anyway...I had to play the soundtrack of "Working Girl" to encourage myself in the middle of the night.

Brit Awards 2010 が 2/16（火）に開催されます。

Brit Awards は、日本でいうところのレコード大賞、アメリカでいうところのグラミー賞にあたります。

この中で「過去 30 年間における最優秀アルバム」の一般投票が 1/19（火）から開始されました。これは BBC2 が選んだ 10 枚のアルバムの中から、一般の視聴者の投票で受賞アルバムを決めるというもの。

ノミネートアルバム 10 枚は以下の通り。

The Brit Awards 2010 の投票サイトでユーザ登録をすれば、イギリス以外の国からでも、投票ができます。国の選択肢にイギリスとアメリカしかないけれど。

その他の賞にノミネートされているアーティストを見ると、Dove も入っているんですね。いつの間にかこんなに有名になるなんて。昨年とはだいぶ顔ぶれが違う印象が。

私も投票しました。
コールドプレイか Dido か迷って Dido に入れてしまいました。ごめんね、コールドプレイ…。

Voting for the best album of the Brit Awards 2010

It’s a time for a big ceremony in the UK.
Yes, it’s the Brit Awards 2010 (16th February).

This award is equivalent to the Japan Record Grand Prix or the Grammy Award.

Their official site has started voting for final selection of “BRITs Album of 30 Years” from 19th January. They decide a winner by public voting among 10 albums which were selected by BBC2.

Here are 10 nominees.

Among this year’s nominees, we can find many new faces. I spotted DOVE. I never imagined they would become such a famous group !

I was torn between Coldplay and Dido…finally I casted my vote for Dido. Sorry, Coldplay…

The vote will end on 28th January.

Coldplay のジャケットが切手に

ロイヤルメールから、British ロックのレコードジャケット10 枚が切手になって１月７日に発売されました。

その中に含まれているのが、コールドプレイの「A Rush Of Blood To The Head」。

このレコードがちょこっと出ているデザインがまたたまりません。

BBC Radio 4 のプログラム（「CHAPTER3」を選ぶか、タイムラインで 21:03 辺りを選択）によると、エリザベス女王がすべてのジャケットのデザインに承認を出したそうです。ロイヤルメールの切手のデザインは、すべて女王の承認がいるだなんて知りませんでした。さすが王室国家。

2 年間のリサーチの末、この 10 枚を選んだそうです。

結構壮大なプロジェクト。ポップカルチャーの印象を変えたい、音楽のダウンロードに慣れてジャケットになじみのない若い世代に挑戦したいという思いが背景にはあります。

ラジオ番組の中でも言われていましたが、アルバムのジャケットデザインはレコードだから街で持ち歩いていても映えるもの。CD や mp3 プレイヤーではなかなかこうは行きません。

発売を記念して、Coldplay の 公認サイトで「応募者の 42 人目にこの切手を貼った手紙を送る」というメッセージを掲載したら、なんと 30 分で全世界 1,700 人から応募が殺到したんだとか。

Coldplay stamp is on sale

The Royal mail issued new stamps featuring 10 album covers of British Rock on the 7th of January.

One of them is Coldplay's A Rush Of Blood To The Head.

I really like this design where a record is emerging from a cover.

According to the Front Row programme on BBC Radio 4 (select "CHAPTER 3" or "21:03" on tiemline), the queen approved all designs. I didn't know that the queen did so for all new stamps. What a queen's country !

Royal Mail selected 10 albums after the research for 2 years. It sounds a pretty huge project. They wanted to change the perception of pop culture and challenge to younger generation of download music that hardly enjoy album covers of their music.

The program said only records had an advantage of artistic influence over CDs or mp3 players while they were eye-catchy in everyone's arm even on a street.

As soon as Coldplay's WEB site announced that they would send a letter with the stamps to the 42nd applicant, 1,700 people over the world rushed into it in 30 minutes !

スーザン・ボイル ついに日本に登場！Suzan Boyle's Japan Debut

ついに今年世界でもっとも話題になったイギリス人（正確にはスコットランド人）の一人、スーザン・ボイルが日本に登場。しかも紅白歌合戦に生出演なんだそうです。

イギリスの人気オーディション番組 "Britain's Got Talent" に出演し、見事な歌唱力であの鬼＆毒舌プロデューサー Simon Cowell を唖然とさせたのはまだ記憶に新しいところ。

彼女の歌声だけでなく、Simon の衝撃を受けた表情が忘れられない感動的な第一回目の映像はこちら

最初は一部のブログやYouTube だけで話題になっていたのが、日本の TV 番組でも取り上げられていたのは驚きでした。ネットによる Global 化はこんなところにも。

事前の人気度・話題性からも、番組の決勝では優勝が確実と見られていたのに優勝を逃すと、直後に過労で倒れるなど、落選さえも大ニュースになってしまう程の人気ぶりでした。暗い話題が続くイギリスで、久々に人々を熱狂させて夢を与えてくれるニュースだったので、日本にいながらついついその展開を追ってしまいました。

会社の同僚と来日コンサートを心待ち（？）にしていますが、こんな形で見られるとは。でも、紅白をずっと観ているのはなかなかしんどい。いつもこの時間は、年賀状の仕上げか、年越しそばやお節作りの時間帯なので。

Finally, one of the best-known British in the world, Suzan Boyle will make her first appearance on NHK's annual year-end grand song festival.

She stared Britain's Got Talent this year and astonished the most critical and acid music producer, Simon Cowell by her voice.

You can watch her brilliant debut stage on YouTube. You cannot miss her voice and Simon's face while he was left speechless.

Initially, she got famous only in the UK after her debut at the TV program. Once some bloggers and net users had spotted her movie on YouTube, it did not take a long time to make her the hottest singer in the world. I could not believe Japanese TV show introduced her stage. We can see the effect of globalization by the Internet here...

No one doubted she would became the winner among other talented finalists. All sorts of media covered her as a top news even when she lost the first prize and had to stay in a hospital. Her appearance made people enthusiastic with her Cinderella story. Actually I could not help keeping abreast of the news thereafter from Japan.

My colleague and I were always looking forward to her first Japan tour... never expected to see her in Japanese music festival. I wonder whether I can stick around the music festival. Because it is always the time to prepare New Year cards, year-crossing noodles, or New Year dishes !

＜第二夜＞「菊地成孔 ダブ・セクステット」＠Bunkamura オーチャードホール

念願の菊池成孔のライブを初体験。
会場は開演前からどこか熱狂的な雰囲気で満ちている。

初めのパートは、ボーカルなしのインストゥルメンタルでガシガシ進む。彼らのジャズは生音だけではなく、サンプリングやエコーなど、ダブの音響加工を効果的に取り入れて、新鮮な音の世界が広がる。それがまたかっこいい。

一聴すると正統派ジャズのようでいながら、生真面目で優等生的なジャズと違って、妖しさ、艶やかさを帯びた独特な世界。

後半は、ゲストの UA も加わって、また違った音楽の世界。
こちらも絶妙なほど、かっこいい。

雷をくらったかのように心を打つカッコよさ、そして酔狂まみれのグルーブ感！
今年観たステージで 5 本の指に入る、記念すべきステージ。

"Naruyoshi Kikuchi Dub Sextet" @Bunkamura Orchard hall

Finally I got a chance to join Naruyoshi Kikuchi's live for the first time.
The hall had been already filled with electric atmosphere before the performances started.

The first part got cracking with powerful instrumental numbers.
They used not only live audio but many sound effects of dub like sampling and echo..it invited the audience to the buzz world.

In my initial impression, their jazz sounded very orthodox, but it was actually more inimitable and coquettish unlike unplayful and nicey-nicey music.

The second part run on with tonight's guest, UA.
It was a fantastic combination.

Thunderous, funky, groovy, full of whims and fancies!!
This concert was one of the top 5 stages this year.
